Belarusian State Medical University

Belarusian State Medical University is the leading higher medical educational institution of the Republic of Belarus, which has a welldeserved authority and recognition not only in our country, but also far beyond its borders. In November 2021, it will celebrate the centenary of its inception. 

The beginning of its history dates back to 1921, when the opening of the Belarusian State University was announced, which included the Faculty of Medicine, which in 1930 became an independent educational institution. The first graduation of doctors took place in 1925-21 people received a diploma of graduation from the faculty.

More than 50.000 physicians have been trained since its foundation;8 faculties, institute, including the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, as well professional programs in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy; 72 departments:

Gomel State Medical University

The history of Gomel State Medical University dates back to 1990, when by the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the BSSR of 14.11.1990 № 284 and the Order of the Minister of Health of the BSSR of 20.11.1990 № 188, in order to ensure the training of doctors and highly qualified specialists for the most affected by the Chernobyl disaster at the Gomel and Mogilev regions, the Gomel State Medical Institute was opened in November 1990.

The university has organized an educational process at 5 faculties: medical; medical and diagnostic; faculty of foreign students; preuniversity training; advanced training and retraining. More than 3,857 students, graduate students, clinical residents study at the university, including 750 foreign citizens from 29 countries of the world receive education in Russian and English.

Education at the university  is practiceoriented and is organized in 38 departments, of which 22 are clinical, as well as in the training center for practical training and simulation training, equipped with modern simulation equipment.

19 large clinics equipped with modern equipment,  on the basis of which training takes place, as well as the Gomel University Clinic – the regional hospital for the disabled of the Great Patriotic War, the professorial advisory center, the research laboratory, the branch laboratory of personalized medicine, the information and publishing center.

Training of medical specialists for foreign countries at Gomel State Medical University was opened in 2000, on the basis of the decision of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus. The first graduation of foreign citizens at Gomel State Medical University took place in 2001, 19 specialist doctors of foreign citizens received diplomas, and in 2002, 32 specialist doctors of foreign citizens have already received diplomas.


During the existence of the faculty, more than 800 foreign specialists from 30 countries have been trained. Currently, the faculty has more than 770 students from 27 countries: India, Syria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Yemen, Lebanon,
Great Britain, France, Peru, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Russia, Ukraine, etc.


The basic department of the faculty is the Department of Russian as a ForeignLanguage, opened in 2003. The study of the Russian language by foreign students is carried out at the preparatory department, 1-3 courses. The university also provides training in English.

Foreign students live in dormitorieswith all amenities, have the opportunity to communicate with each other withinthe framework of fraternities, celebrate national and religious holidays, participate in national festivals and
exhibitions.
In 1-2 courses, foreign students study normal anatomy and histology, cytology and embryology, general and bioorganic
chemistry, medical biology and general genetics, normal physiology and biochemistry. The teaching staff of the theoretical departments of the university provides teaching of fundamental medical disciplines at a high scientific and methodological level. Along with medical and biological subjects, students study Russian and Latin.

3-4 year students study clinical disciplines: pathological physiology and pathological anatomy, microbiology and pharmacology, general surgery and propaedeutics of internal diseases, general hygiene, etc.


Students get acquainted for the first time with the clinical bases of the university, hospitals, where the foundation for their
future professional activities is laid. In 5-6 courses, foreign students study surgical and internal diseases, pediatrics
and ophthalmology, otolaryngology, infectious and tropical diseases, psychiatry.

Vitebsk State Medical Institute

The University is one of the premier medical
institutions situated in Belarus. It has been
founded in 1934. Vitebsk is among the one

Grodno State Medical University

In the postwar period the social sphere of the Republic of Belarus began to develop actively.

service and to provide medical training and research in western region of Belarus, State Medical Institute in Grodno was established, 250 students were admitted for the academic year 1958/59.

It is difficult to imagine the huge amount of work on the creation of a new institution from scratch for anyone who doesn’t know much about the life of an educational institution. It’s a pleasure to kindly remember those who took part in this complex process. Scientists and doctors from Russia, Ukraine, Baltic States, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan helped with the creation of
the institute. Logistical assistance and personnel was also provided by Minsk Medical Institute and Vitebsk Medical Institute.

Medical staff of Grodno was involved in the implementation of the educational process. Organizational assistance and financial support were provided by the Ministry of Health of the Republic. For instance, in 1963 the Ministry of Health gave thousands of rubles for the purchase of equipment. Local executive authorities and the party leadership of the region had taken a decision on the direction of the personnel, giving the institute buildings, material and technical resources.Initially buildings were located on Kolkhoznaya square, Karl Marx and E.Ozheshko streets. In 1960 the first building for biology classes was built. Later, the institute was given the administrative building under construction on Gorky Street (1974).

Currently, the University has 5 academic buildings. Today they have acquired a modern look.
